First resolve San Diego, California versus San Diego, Texas

The place name is not enough

Most searches for “San Diego criminal records” mean San Diego County, California, but San Diego is also the county seat of Duval County, Texas. California Superior Court records should start at the San Diego Superior Court; a Duval County filing should start with the Duval County District Clerk. Save the state with every result so a valid same-name record is not assigned to the wrong jurisdiction.

California: use the court index to locate the case

Search task What the court index can do Important limit
Find a criminal case Search by party name, case number or district attorney case number and return core case/location information. The index is case-location information, not a statewide California criminal-history report.
Research older cases The court describes historical coverage limits, including records not represented in the online index. A missing online hit is not proof that no older case exists.
Locate a misdemeanor Some misdemeanor/Civil Limited online index coverage can be limited by age/location. Use the court’s older-file and courthouse routes when the date falls outside online coverage.

California: the docket result and the court document are different products

Online case information

The case search can identify the case number, location, parties and filing information needed to continue research.

Criminal court documents

San Diego Superior Court access guidance says criminal documents generally are not available for public viewing or download through the online case-search interface. Use the court’s copy/file process for the document itself.

Certified copy or disposition

If the recipient needs official proof, ask for certification of the specific judgment, minute order or other filing. A screenshot of a case index is research evidence, not a certified court record.

Order copies using the case number and court location

  1. 01
    Capture the case reference

Save the complete case number and courthouse location exactly as the court index shows them.

  2. 02
    Identify the filing you need

A judgment, sentencing minute order, dismissal or other specific document can answer an outcome question more directly than requesting the entire file.

  3. 03
    Use the court’s copy route

The Obtain a Court File/Copy page explains in-person and mail routes and notes that some newer criminal filings can be purchased through an online request flow for mailed delivery.

  4. 04
    State whether certification is required

Do not assume an ordinary copy will satisfy a licensing, immigration, legal or other recipient requirement. Ask the receiving organization what form it accepts before paying.

For statewide California history, the court index is the wrong product

Need Better official source Identity / access point
Your own California statewide criminal-history review California DOJ Record Review. Fingerprint-based. California DOJ currently lists a $25 processing fee; California residents generally use Live Scan and out-of-state applicants use fingerprint cards.
A San Diego County case document San Diego Superior Court. Case number/location; certification if needed.
Another person’s official California DOJ criminal-history record Not available as a general public DOJ lookup. DOJ says individuals may request their own record review; it does not process third-party requests simply to reveal another person’s history.

Use no-result language that matches the system searched

“No online case found” is narrower than “no criminal record”

Online indexes have date, case-type and confidentiality limits, while California DOJ and other jurisdictions use different repositories. Record the name spelling, approximate date range, case type and system checked. If the matter is consequential, verify an identified case against the court document and use the statewide DOJ self-review only for the subject’s own California criminal-history review.

Texas: route a San Diego, Texas case to Duval County

  • ✓
Confirm the caption says Texas/Duval County. The official Duval County District Clerk is located in San Diego, Texas.
  • ✓
Use the clerk’s case-access/copy route for a Duval County district-court case instead of the California Superior Court index.
  • ✓
Keep the state in your notes and saved filename so “San Diego” never becomes the only provenance attached to the result.
  • ✓
Do not merge California and Texas no-result conclusions. They are independent court systems.
